He was born March 24, 1918, in Robersonville, N.C., the son of Ernest and Bertha (Hayes) Whitehurst. Mr. Whitehurst lived most of his life in New England where he worked as a mechanic and truck driver. In 1959, he bought a farm in Benson, where he and his family lived for many years. After retiring, he and his wife spent winters in Georgia and summers in Vermont.

Nancy I. Chard, 59, a Democrat who is a college administrator, is seeking a second term unopposed in Windham 2-3. Democratic incumbent Rep. Virginia A. Milkey, 42, also seeks for a second time for the Windham 2-1 seat.
She is unopposed. According to Brattleboro Town Clerk Annette L. Cappy, some independent candidates will run in the race against Emond. Shoshana Rihn and Darryl Pillsbury, have announced their plans to run as independents. Windham 5, which used to include part of Brattleboro and has been reapportioned to cover only publican primary in the one-seat district made up of Ludlow, Plymouth and Shrewsbury.
Keith O. Arlund of Ludlow will face off against Albert Martin, a Plymouth man who is a retired Rutland City school teacher. One of them will challenge incumbent Democrat John F. Murphy, the Dean of the House of Representatives, in the November election. A 12-year-veteran of the House, Republican Rep.
Barbara C. Wood faces a challenge from first-time candidate Doug Collins, a Democrat, for a one-member district composed of the towns of Bethel, Pittsfield, Rochester and Stockbridge. Incumbent Aili R. Farrar, a Democrat, will see a challenge from Republican William H. Maas for the single seat that represents the towns of Chester, Andover, Weston and Baltimore.
Farrar has served in the House for four years since she defeated Maas by five votes in 1988. Franklin, Sr. Both are from Guilford. Squires is running for his second term. There is a race between two Republicans in Windham 4, which consists of Londonderry, Dover, Jamaica, Stratton and Wardsboro. Michael Bernhardt and incumbent Rep.
Wendell L. Coleman, both of Londonderry, are vying for the same seat. The former Windham-Windsor 1 district was renamed and Dover replaced Weston in its jurisdiction. Bernhardt, 55, who owns WCRFFM in Springfield, served in the House from 1981 to 1988. Coleman, 45, a farmer, seeks his third term.
Democratic incumbent Rep. David M. Clarkson of Newfane is the sole contender for Windham3, which includes Brookline, MarIboro, Newfane and Townshend. The former math teacher was appointed to complete the term of Rep. Eugene Godt, who resigned because of ailing health in 1989.
Clarkson was elected a year later. Incumbent Rep. David Larsen, a Wilmington Democrat, is unopposed for the BenningtonWindham 1 seat. The district includes Wilmington, Halifax, Whitingham, Somerset and Searsburg. Larsen, 43, a high school social studies teacher, has served six years in the Legislature.

She graduated from Springfield High School and Radcliffe College. lard 1938. Shia married Professor William BalMrs. Ballard worked in a museum in Cambridge and Philadelphia. She was a era pianist and collaborated with her mothin collecting and publishing folk songs, particularly in Vermont.
She helped organize and was active in the Hanover Meeting of the Society of Friends and the Friends of Hopkins Center. She sung in the Handel Society chorus, Thetford Chorus and the Hanover Women's Chorus. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dr. David Ballard of Sonoma, and William Ballard of Westminster West; two daughters, Nancy Jean Seigel of McLean, and Helen Sagan of Wellesley, six grandchildren; and a brother, James Flanders of Cambridge, Mass. She was born April 7, 1902, in Boston, daughter of Norman and Grace (Grandin) Greeley. She was educated at the Windsor School in Boston, and The Miss Porters School in Farmington, in 1920.
Debute was at Copley Plaza in 1921. She married 'Jonathan Brown III, in 1934, in Boston, William Stuart Forbes in 1934, in Beverly, and Harmon Chamberlin in 1945. Mrs. Chamberlin, together with her husband, owned and operated The Rendezvous in Southport, Maine, Nicatous Lodge and Camps in Burlington, Maine. She was a member of Woodstock D.A.R., VINS, and an Red Cross volunteer.
Survivors include a son, Norman Brown of Cape Elizabeth, Maine; three daughters, Patricia Young of Jensen Beach, Shirley Haselton of Short Hills, N.J.; and Joan Arend of Treasure Island, a step daughter, Margaret Dewey of Deerfield, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and two cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, a sister, a son, Jonathan Brown IV, and a grandson, Jonathan Brown V. Howard A. Finch CHESTER A private funeral service is planned for Howard A. Finch, a former resident of Chester, who died Saturday in West Palm Beach, after short illness.
